Let there be light!!

Both stories of the main house are flanked by large windows, from one end to the other.  This makes for a happy bright interior.  Because so many trees surround the property, the light is dramatic and beautiful.  It’s a joy to wake up to this light. It’s peaceful to look out towards the bamboo, the huge oaks, maples and evergreens, and to see the yard filled with Magnolias, Hydrangeas, and Rhododendrons.

Location. Location.  Location.

Dinner downtown?  Friends dying to see the Biltmore Estate?  Gotta get on the interstate right quick?  Gotta have broken nose treated?  This house has an enviable location.

The trees, the lot.

You don’t even feel you’re so close to downtown.  We hear this over and over.  It’s nice to have so much greenery and so much space in a rapidly-developing city undergoing urban sprawl.

Cottage turned on its head.

Let’s not make any mistakes, there’s only so much one can do with a four-square kit house that originally housed workers for the Biltmore Estate (reportedly).  This is a cottage.  But the furnishings and decor make it modern, du jour, and fun to live in.  Rather than a functional home, this cottage has the charm of its original design but has been kitted and outfitted with modern technology, touches, and aesthetic.  

Good Vibrations.

Yup. It’s a creative, productive and comfortable space.  It’s not cookie-cutter/contractor grade/do-the-minimum decor and architecture.  It’s ineffable; it’s a special place.  Award-winning films, poetry, and commercials have been created here.  You have to feel it to believe it.

Kimchi Ice Cream.

Yeah, you wanna make that crazy stuff in the kitchen, then go crazy.  Two ovens, microwave, pro coffee-maker, divided drawers, pantry pull out cabinets, etc. are the perfect setting for eggs and bacon or sou vide eggs esoterica.  And all in a seamless bamboo sided cabinetry.  Yum.

Guest House.

Friends in town, but you don’t want to see them that much?  Got a teenager who thinks he or she knows everything and wants to live apart?  Got a college kid?  Then this modern little garage cottage is perfect.  My wife did an amazing job when she redid it as she included a large picture window, a redesigned bathroom, kitchen space and a large deck with seating for four.
